Swedish company Modvion believes it has found a greener alternative — building turbine towers from wood. ModvionAccording to Otto Lundman, co-founder and CEO of Modvion, using wooden towers reduces the lifecycle emissions of a wind turbine by over 25%, and by 90% if you only compare the tower component of the turbine. He adds that if you take into account the carbon dioxide absorbed by trees when they grow, the wooden towers can be considered to store more carbon that they emit. The Biden administration greenlit the seventh large offshore wind project in the United States Tuesday. But a new nationwide study that analyzed data from 300 million home sales and 60,000 wind turbines finds turbines’ impact on home values is much lower than previously thought – about a 1% drop on average for a home with at least one wind turbine within six miles. Even for homes close to a turbine, the study finds the negative impact to property value “diminishes and eventually disappears” within a decade. Getting the answer required building a massive mapping database of the distance between US homes and wind turbines, accounting for changes in topography and other factors. The study also explored just how big wind turbines appear to the human eye. Much of the growth in wind turbines in the US has been on farmland in the Midwest, Great Plains states and Texas.

America's first commercial-scale offshore wind farm is officially open, a long-awaited moment that helps pave the way for a succession of large wind farms. The Biden administration has approved six commercial-scale offshore wind energy projects, and auctioned lease areas for offshore wind for the first time off the Pacific and Gulf of Mexico coasts. Ørsted CEO Mads Nipper called the opening a major milestone that proves large offshore wind farms can be built, both in the United States and in other countries with little or no offshore wind energy currently. The first U.S. offshore wind farm was supposed to be a project off the coast of Massachusetts known as Cape Wind. The nation's second large offshore wind farm, Vineyard Wind, is expected to open later this year off the coast of Massachusetts, too.

Utah's governor signed a bill into law Tuesday that makes the state the latest to prohibit diversity training, hiring and inclusion programs at universities and in state government. The measure signed by Spencer Cox, a Republican who previously said he supported the idea, had cleared the state House and Senate by wide, party-line majorities. In the United States, California continues to have the most solar energy, followed by Texas, Florida, North Carolina, and Arizona. China was one of the few growing markets this year for wind, the Global Wind Energy Council said. Faster permitting and other improvements in key markets such as Germany and India also helped add more wind energy. The top three markets this year are still China, the United States, and Germany for wind energy produced on land, and China, the United Kingdom, and Germany for offshore. The analysts are predicting that the global industry will rebound next year and make nearly 12% more wind energy available worldwide.

☆ WindCORES cuts emissions by putting data centers inside wind turbines

CNN —Accounting for up to 1.5% of global electricity use, data centers are fueling the climate crisis. WindCORES, a subsidiary of German renewable electricity company WestfalenWIND, operates data centers inside wind turbines located in a wind park in the Paderborn district in western Germany, which the company says makes the centers almost carbon neutral. The concept uses existing wind turbines to power data centers on site, while fiber optic cables provide a constant internet connection. WindCORES estimates that the unused electricity generated during this period could power one-third of all German data centers. Zattoo joined windCORES in 2020, when it moved one of its six data centers into a wind turbine in Paderborn.
